New
Ireland
is a little more than one hour's flight from Port Moresby (capital), over
rugged mountains, secluded tropical islands and waterways, brings you to
one of Papua New Guinea’s most picturesque and tranquil outer islands,
Kavieng. With it's crystal clear, tropical waters teeming with diverse
marine life and WWII relics Kavieng offers visitors a wonderful opportunity
to escape to an idyllic tropical island paradise undisturbed by modern
civilisation.
The Kavieng Hotel, well known for its warm hospitality and friendly
service, offers guests accommodation in airconditioned comfort with private
facilities. Malign Lodge, situated right on the beachfront in Kavieng offers
alternative accommodation.
During World War 2, New Ireland was in the front line of the Japanese
southward advance and today rusting tanks, naval and and aircraft guns
are a silent reminder of the past. For divers, wrecked seaplanes, ships
and submarines lie in clear shallow waters along the coast.
Kavieng
has many reefs, wrecks and islands yet to be explored some of the more
popular dive sites include;
-
Albatross Passage a narrow passage with a depth of 80 to 130 feet
where grey whaler sharks are encountered.
-
Eagle Ray Passage which has two pinnacles forming a passage home
to some large pelagic species, soft corals, reef fish and Eagle Rays.
-
T's Reef which is home to masses of large gorgonian fans, a Japanese
Supply Ship and Mini Sub.
Kavieng also offers a good selection of water sports and tours for the
non diver and the "resting diver". A glass bottom boat, game fishing, golf,
water skiing, memorial tours by land or sea, hobbie cats, crocodile tours,
and kayak tours provide relaxation or cultural experiences for everyone.
