Located
on Kimbe Bay, about a 45 minute drive from Hoskins Airport, West New Britain,
Walindi is the gateway to some of the most spectacular pinnacle and reef
diving to be found anywhere in the world.
Walindi Resort accommodates up to 29 guests in 7 bungalows and
4 plantation house guest rooms. Each bungalow features a double and single
bed, private facilities, ceiling fans, bar fridge, and tea/coffee making
facilities. The guest rooms have 2 single beds per room ceiling fans, tea/coffee
making, with guests sharing the bathroom facilities.
Recreational facilities include a swimming pool, a tennis court,
boating and fishing.
As Walindi is not a large dive resort, divers receive undivided
attention on all dive trips. Dive sites range from volcanic caves enveloped
by staghorn coral, dramatic reef drop offs, gorgonian fans, pelagics and
turtles.
Some
of the more popular dives sites include:
-
Rainbow Ridge; huge barrel sponges loom out from the reef and attract
a host of multicoloured feather stars.
-
Venessa's Reef; giant sea fans in orange, pink and red are over
12 feet across and dominate the seascape. This natural wonder is known
as Amphitheatre. Barrel sponges and white trailing seawhips are also abundant.
-
The Cathedral; directly in front of Walindi is popular for night
diving. The outside is draped in staghorn and gorgonian coral. There are
huge spiral whips that extend out 30 feet or more from the reef face.
-
Bradford Shoals; a volcanic pinnacle rising up from over 2000 feet.
Divers are usually greeted by a school of resident barracuda. Schools of
big eyed jacks, seaperch and surgeon fish dominate this dive. Clusters
of sea fans and fire whips alongside soft corals cover the reef.
New Ireland
is a little more than one hour's flight from Port Moresby (capital), over
rugged mountains, secluded tropical islands and waterways, brings you to
one of Papua New Guinea’s most picturesque and tranquil outer islands,
Kavieng. With it's crystal clear, tropical waters teeming with diverse
marine life and WWII relics Kavieng offers visitors a wonderful opportunity
to escape to an idyllic tropical island paradise undisturbed by modern
civilisation.
The Kavieng Hotel, well known for its warm hospitality and friendly
service, offers guests accommodation in airconditioned comfort with private
facilities. Malign Lodge, situated right on the beachfront in Kavieng offers
alternative accommodation.
During World War 2, New Ireland was in the front line of the Japanese
southward advance and today rusting tanks, naval and and aircraft guns
are a silent reminder of the past. For divers, wrecked seaplanes, ships
and submarines lie in clear shallow waters along the coast.
Kavieng
has many reefs, wrecks and islands yet to be explored some of the more
popular dive sites include;
-
Albatross Passage a narrow passage with a depth of 80 to 130 feet
where grey whaler sharks are encountered.
-
Eagle Ray Passage which has two pinnacles forming a passage home
to some large pelagic species, soft corals, reef fish and Eagle Rays.
-
T's Reef which is home to masses of large gorgonian fans, a Japanese
Supply Ship and Mini Sub.
Kavieng also offers a good selection of water sports and tours for the
non diver and the "resting diver". A glass bottom boat, game fishing, golf,
water skiing, memorial tours by land or sea, hobbie cats, crocodile tours,
and kayak tours provide relaxation or cultural experiences for everyone.
